The new Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, the Hon Julianna Y O’Connor-Connolly, JP, is to visit the House of Commons and the House of Lords in London next week.

Over a three-day schedule, she will meet various dignitaries including the Speaker of the House of Commons, the Rt. Hon Michael Martin, MP, and the Chairman of the Ways and Means the Rt. Hon Sir Alan Haselhurst, MP.

It is not uncommon, and is indeed recommendable, for new Speakers of Commonwealth Parliaments to visit Westminster. The Standing Orders of the Cayman Islands Legislative Assembly are based upon the Westminster system and where there is no provision in the Standing Orders on any matter, resort shall be had to the usage and practice of the Commons House of Parliament of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Whilst in London the Speaker will also meet with the new Secretary-General of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, Headquarters Secretariat, the Hon Dennis Marshall.
